What Are Cooling Towers Used For?

Cooling towers play a critical role in helping industrial and commercial facilities manage heat effectively. Whether part of a power station, a manufacturing plant, or a large building’s HVAC system, these towers are responsible for removing excess heat from processes and systems by cooling down the water used within them. Without efficient heat management, equipment can overheat, energy efficiency drops, and systems may face unnecessary strain. That’s why cooling towers remain a core component in many high-demand environments.

How Cooling Towers Work in Water Cooling Systems

Cooling towers are a key part of many water-cooling systems. They work by extracting heat from warm water and releasing it into the atmosphere. The cooled water is then recirculated back into the system. This process is commonly achieved through evaporative cooling, where water is distributed over fill media inside the tower. Air flows through the tower to help evaporate a portion of the water, which removes heat and reduces the temperature of the remaining water.

Franklin Hodge offers a range of open and closed-circuit cooling towers, each engineered for efficiency and operational reliability. Whether part of a high-capacity industrial setup or a bespoke commercial system, these towers help control heat while reducing energy use and system stress.

Types of Cooling Towers Available from Franklin Hodge

Each site has unique cooling requirements, which is why Franklin Hodge provides multiple cooling tower configurations under the Carter Environmental brand:

  • Induced Draught Cooling Towers (BUC Series)
These towers use axial fans located at the top of the unit to pull air upward through the system. Suitable for large-scale industrial and commercial applications, BUC towers offer high efficiency and are available in both single and multi-cell setups.
  • Forced Draught Cooling Towers (BAL and SAN Series)
These models use fans at the base of the tower to push air into the system. The BAL series features centrifugal fans, while the SAN series includes axial fan sets. Both options are counterflow designs and can be supplied as open or closed-circuit units depending on site requirements.
  • Dry Air Blast Coolers (ABC and WABC Series)
Designed for closed circuit cooling, these units use air alone, or in adiabatic mode (WABC) , to cool water without evaporation. This is particularly valuable in locations with strict water use or plume control considerations.

Each of these cooling tower types offers different benefits depending on the size, location, and requirements of the system.

Why Industrial Cooling Towers Are Essential for Operations

In industries that rely on process cooling, such as food processing, energy generation, and chemical manufacturing, cooling towers are essential for managing operational heat. Excessive heat buildup can lead to unplanned shutdowns, reduced equipment lifespan, and increased energy consumption.

Using an efficient cooling tower system allows industrial operations to:

  • Maintain safe operating temperatures for machinery
  • Improve system efficiency and reduce energy costs
  • Extend the life of equipment by reducing thermal stress
  • Avoid downtime caused by overheating

For facilities running complex systems or high-capacity machinery, cooling towers are not optional, they are central to maintaining day-to-day productivity and long-term reliability.

Regular Cooling Tower Maintenance and Refurbishment

Cooling towers operate continuously in demanding conditions, which means they require routine servicing to stay efficient. Maintenance not only ensures optimal performance but also identifies early signs of wear, corrosion, or scaling that could affect efficiency or safety.

Regular cooling tower servicing and refurbishment help:

  • Prevent unexpected system failures
  • Reduce water and energy waste
  • Comply with health and safety regulations
  • Extend the lifespan of components such as fans, drift eliminators, and heat exchange packs

Ignoring maintenance can result in reduced cooling performance and higher operational costs over time. That’s why a scheduled maintenance plan, tailored to the equipment and environment, is essential for industrial and commercial facilities.
