Types of Water Tank Level Gauge

Each of the four contents measuring gauge types has specific strengths: 

• Direct acting gauges provide a mechanical, at-the-tank reading. Simple, robust, and requiring no power or external sensor, they’re reliable for straightforward on-site monitoring. 

• Hydrostatic capillary gauges measure water level by the pressure at the base of the tank, translating it into a reading via a capillary system. Useful where the display needs to sit away from the tank. 

• ‘Cat and mouse’ gauges use a traditional counter-weighted float that moves a visible indicator up and down a vertical scale on the outside of the tank. A long-service mechanical design with a very clear visual readout. 

• Electronic gauges provide a digital reading and can feed directly into a building management system, pump control, or remote monitoring platform. 

Each type has a different cost, accuracy, and integration profile. The right one depends on what the tank is doing and who needs to read it.

Choosing the Right Level Gauge for Your Application 

Specification usually comes down to three questions: 

• Where will the reading happen? If a technician walks past the tank daily, a direct acting or cat and mouse gauge is fine. If the tank is remote or out of direct sight, hydrostatic or electronic is the answer. 

• How accurate does it need to be? For compliance reading on a fire protection reserve, precise volume matters. For general visual monitoring, approximate is often enough. 

• Does the output need to feed a control system? Only electronic gauges will integrate with automated pump, alarm, or BMS controls.
