Firetainer® Solution Delivers Reliable Fire Protection for Gracechurch Shopping Centre
Introduction
When the Gracechurch Shopping Centre required a safe and efficient solution for fire water storage during a major redevelopment project, we were brought in by Carswell Fire to design, manufacture, and install a robust tank system tailored to the site’s unique constraints.
The project demanded precision, compliance, and minimal disruption to operations, all of which were achieved through Franklin Hodge’s expertise and proven installation process.
Client Background
Located in the heart of Sutton Coldfield, the Gracechurch Shopping Centre is a large commercial complex serving thousands of daily visitors. As part of a redevelopment to improve safety systems and upgrade fire protection infrastructure, the client required a reliable fire water storage system that would integrate seamlessly with the centre’s existing fire suppression network.
The challenge lay in limited space availability, strict compliance with fire and building regulations, and the need to complete the installation without affecting the centre’s daily operation.
Franklin Hodge Solution
A 250m³ Cylindrical Sectional Firetainer® Tank
Manufactured in-house from high-quality, pre-coated steel panels and assembled on site to accomodate restricted access areas within the shopping centre.
Internal PVC Liner System
Ensuring long-term water integrity and minimal maintenance.
Fully Compliant Design
Meeting LPCB and BS EN 12845 standards for sprinkler systems.
Ancillary Equipment Integration
Including connections for pumps and fire control systems.
Results
Following installation, the Gracechurch Shopping Centre achieved:
- Enhanced fire safety compliance with modern LPCB-approved infrastructure.
- Zero operational downtime during installation, with the team working within defined access and noise constraints.
- Long-term reliability and reduced maintenance costs due to the robust construction and corrosion-resistant materials.
- Improved risk management for insurers and tenants through verifiable, compliant water storage performance.
Challenges Overcome
The primary challenge was restricted access to the designated tank location, which prevented the use of large, prefabricated components. Franklin Hodge’s modular, site-assembled design allowed the entire Firetainer® system to be built safely within confined parameters.
Another key challenge was the tight installation schedule imposed by the redevelopment timeline. Through coordinated planning with the client’s M&E consultants and contractors, Franklin Hodge completed the project on time without impacting public access or trading.
Conclusion
This project exemplifies Franklin Hodge’s ability to deliver bespoke, compliant, and high-performance fire water storage solutions for complex commercial environments.
The successful installation at Gracechurch Shopping Centre reinforces our reputation for precision engineering, exceptional service, and proven expertise in critical water storage applications.
