Liquid Storage Tanks: Reliable Solutions for Industrial and Commercial Sites

Every industrial and commercial site has different storage demands. You might need clean drinking water for a hospital, fire protection capacity for a warehouse complex, or sealed effluent containment for a processing plant. The common thread is that you need a liquid storage tank you can trust, one that performs reliably, meets UK regulations, and lasts for decades.

At Franklin Hodge we’ve been designing and manufacturing liquid storage tanks for over 50 years. We supply tanks across the UK and internationally, working with facility managers, engineers, and procurement teams to deliver the right solution for each project.

Understanding Liquid Storage Tank Requirements for Industrial and Commercial Sites

Getting the tank specification right at the start saves time, money, and compliance headaches later. The type of liquid you are storing, the volume required, the site conditions, and the applicable regulations all influence which tank system is the best fit.

Industrial sites typically need tanks for process water, fire suppression, cooling systems, or waste containment. Commercial buildings often require drinking water storage, sprinkler system capacity, or greywater management. Each application comes with its own set of performance requirements and regulatory standards.

The key questions to answer early in any project are straightforward. What liquid are you storing? What capacity do you need? What space and access do you have on site? And what compliance standards apply? Franklin Hodge’s engineering team works through these details with you to make sure your tank specification is right before manufacture begins.

Franklin Hodge’s Range of Liquid Storage Solutions

Franklin Hodge manufactures a range of tank systems, each engineered for specific storage applications.

Fire Protection Tanks provide pump suction and sprinkler water storage for fire safety systems. Our Firestore® cylindrical and Firetainer® rectangular sectional, site assembled tanks are LPCB-approved and built to comply with BS EN 12845. Our Firestore® cylindrical tank is also FM-approved.

Drinking Water Tanks store potable water safely for commercial, residential, and public sector projects. These cylindrical tanks feature WRAS-approved linings and are assembled quickly on site.  Our Liquistore® cylindrical tank is WRAS drinking water storage approved, as a complete tank unit.

Waste and Effluent Tanks use glass-coated steel, (glass-fused-to-steel) plates with sealed mastic construction. They handle corrosive and challenging liquids while keeping the surrounding environment protected.

All of our tanks are site-assembled from modular panels, (sectional), which means we can build to your exact capacity and configure the tank to fit your available space.

Ensuring Compliance With UK Storage Tank Regulations

Compliance is not something to sort out after installation. It needs to be designed in from the start.

For drinking water storage, your tank must use WRAS-approved materials and meet BS EN 13280 standards. For fire protection, LPCB certification and compliance with BS EN 12845, or FM approval, are mandatory. Effluent and waste storage tanks must meet environmental regulations to prevent contamination of soil and groundwater.

Franklin Hodge tanks are built to meet these standards. Our fire protection tanks carry LPCB and Factory Mutual (FM) certification. Our drinking water tanks use WRAS-approved linings and are WRAS approved as a complete unit. And our effluent tanks are constructed with sealed mastic joints and corrosion-resistant coatings designed to contain challenging liquids safely.

We also provide the documentation you need, including compliance records, test certificates, and technical specifications, so you can demonstrate regulatory adherence to auditors and inspectors without chasing paperwork.

How Site-Assembled Tanks Solve Space and Access Challenges

One of the most common problems on industrial and commercial sites is limited space. Basements, plant rooms, rooftops, and restricted access areas all create challenges for tank installation.

Because Franklin Hodge tanks are sectional, that is assembled on site from individual steel panels, we can build tanks in locations where a prefabricated unit simply would not fit. Panels are transported to site in manageable sizes and bolted together by our installation teams.

Our Firetainer® system takes this further. This modular rectangular tank is designed specifically for restricted spaces, fitting into areas where cylindrical tanks cannot be accommodated. It is ideal for basements, loft spaces, and tight plant rooms where every metre counts.

Site assembly also means reduced transport costs, smaller delivery vehicles, and less disruption to an operational site during installation.

Long-Term Performance Through Quality Materials and Construction

A liquid storage tank is a long-term infrastructure asset. The materials and construction methods used at the point of manufacture directly determine how long that asset will perform.

Franklin Hodge uses high-grade G600 galvanised steel for structural durability and corrosion resistance. For tanks storing corrosive or chemically aggressive liquids, we use glass-coated steel plates that resist degradation over decades of use. Internal linings are selected based on the specific liquid being stored, whether that is potable water, process water, or waste effluent.

This attention to material selection is what separates a tank that lasts 10 years from one that serves you for 30 or more. Combined with low maintenance requirements and the option for tank refurbishment when needed, a Franklin Hodge tank delivers strong return on investment across its full working life.
