Internal Tank Liners

The liner inside your tank does a lot of quiet, important work. It protects the structure from corrosion, keeps the stored liquid uncontaminated, and ultimately determines how long your tank stays in service. At Franklin Hodge, internal liners are a standard part of how we build and refurbish tanks, not an afterthought.

Do Franklin Hodge Tanks Have an Internal Liner?

Yes, Franklin Hodge offers a range of tanks that come with tailor-made internal membrane liners for enhanced protection.

Every liner is custom-made to fit the tank it goes into. We use high-quality synthetic membrane materials selected specifically for the application, whether that’s potable water, fire protection, or industrial storage. The liner forms a watertight barrier between the stored liquid and the tank structure, preventing corrosion, contamination, and premature deterioration.

What Materials Are Used in Franklin Hodge Internal Tank Liners?

We select liner materials based on what your tank stores and the conditions it operates in. The three materials we work with are:

  • Butyl rubber, approved in line with WRAS for potable and drinking water storage, tested to BS 6920
  • EPDM, highly flexible and resistant to extreme temperatures, well suited to outdoor and industrial applications
  • PVC, a versatile option for a range of storage applications where a cost-effective, durable solution is needed.  Suited for where the stored water has some aggressive additives, such as chlorine.

Butyl and EPDM liners will stretch to 300% of their original size before losing water-retaining properties, making them particularly resilient under pressure or movement. All materials are impermeable, weather resistant, and built to handle prolonged exposure to UV, radiation, and temperature extremes.

Why the Liner Matters More Than Most People Realise

A tank without an adequate liner, or one with a liner that’s degraded over time, is a liability. Water quality suffers; the steel structure corrodes faster, and you’re facing either a costly replacement or a compliance issue.

A well-specified internal liner:

  • Prevents corrosion from the inside out, significantly extending tank lifespan
  • Maintains water quality by blocking contamination from the tank structure
  • Keeps your system compliant with WRAS, BS 6920, and relevant water storage regulations
  • Reduces the frequency and cost of maintenance interventions

For many clients, relining an existing tank is a far more practical and cost-effective route than full replacement, and we can assess whether that’s the right option for your site.

Liner Installation and Refurbishment

Franklin Hodge installs internal liners in new tanks and as part of our tank refurbishment services. If your existing liner is showing signs of wear, degradation, or contamination, our team can survey the tank, remove the old liner, and install a new one to the same specification as a new build.

We also offer specialist repair kits and cold-seal options for remote or hard-to-access locations where full on-site installation isn’t practical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Franklin Hodge tanks come with an internal liner as standard?

Yes, our tanks are supplied with tailor-made internal membrane liners suited to the intended storage application, whether potable water, fire protection, or industrial use.

Are Franklin Hodge liners safe for drinking water?

Yes, our butyl rubber liners are WRAS-approved and tested to BS 6920, confirming suitability for potable and drinking water storage.

Can you reline an existing tank that wasn’t supplied by Franklin Hodge?

Yes, our team can assess, remove, and replace liners in existing tanks regardless of the original manufacturer, as part of our tank refurbishment programme.

How long do internal tank liners last?

With proper maintenance and periodic inspection, Franklin Hodge liners provide reliable, long-term service. Lifespan depends on the stored liquid, operating conditions, and maintenance frequency.

Is relining a tank better than replacing it?

In many cases, yes. Relining restores the tank’s internal protection without the cost and disruption of a full replacement, and it’s often the more practical solution for tanks that are structurally sound.
