GRP Water Tanks

GRP water tanks have a real place in water storage. They are light, corrosion resistant, and simple to position, which suits smaller cold-water duties well. For the demanding industrial and commercial projects, we take on, butyl-lined galvanised steel usually holds up better over the long term. We supply galvanised steel and glass-coated tanks, and we use GRP where it genuinely performs, as roofs on larger steel tanks.

Where GRP Water Tanks Fit

GRP, or glass reinforced plastic, works well when you need a lightweight tank that resists corrosion. It suits smaller cold-water services, feed and make-up water, and sites where a one-piece moulded tank is quicker to place. For those duties it does the job. The picture changes once you need high volumes, a long service life, or a tank that copes with a tough climate. For general cold-water duties, we supply cold water storage tanks in galvanised steel with an internal butyl liner, sized to your site.

GRP Sectional Tanks vs Steel Sectional Tanks

A GRP sectional tank seals every panel with a gasket or mastic, and those seals age over time. A membrane-lined steel tank works differently. The water sits inside a one-piece butyl liner, so the shell itself carries no seals to fail, and any puncture is contained in the liner and simple to repair. Our sectional water tanks are made from hot-dip galvanised steel, with panels overlapped and bolted together on site, then fitted with the liner. It is a quick, dependable build that holds up under hard use.

Why Steel Suits Demanding Water Storage

Steel earns its place on industrial and commercial sites because the design copes with real-world stress. The butyl liner is inert in water and will not break down, and because it sits shielded inside the shell, strong sun and UV never reach the surface holding your water. The unsealed shell and flexible liner also absorb the movement and vibration that would test a rigid, sealed tank. Maintained well, a steel tank gives a minimum of 15 years of service and often far longer, and when it does age, we can reline or repair it through our tank refurbishment services rather than replace it.

GRP Roofs on Steel and Glass-Coated Tanks

GRP is our first choice in one place, and that is the roof. A GRP roof is built from moulded petals craned into position to form a sealed, weatherproof dome that carries its own weight. We fitted exactly this on a glass-coated tank for a major water utility, replacing an ageing tank on its existing base with no break in daily operations. It is a good example of putting each material to work where it is strongest.

Choosing the Right Tank for Your Site

The right tank depends on your capacity, your approvals, your climate, and the space you have to work with. GRP makes sense for compact, corrosion-resistant duties, while steel comes into its own for larger volumes and hot climates. For potable supplies we build approved drinking water tanks to suit the capacity you need. We help you weigh the options, so the finished tank works as one reliable system.
