How Grain Drying and Silo Storage Work Together

Grain coming off the field is often too wet to store safely. Left damp, it heats, moulds, and loses value within weeks. Drying brings the moisture down to a safe level, and the silo then holds the dry grain in good condition until you need it. The two jobs are separate but linked, which is why it pays to plan the dryer and the store together rather than bolting one onto the other later. How far you need to dry depends on the crop and how long you plan to hold it, and getting it wrong is costly, whether that means spoiled grain or fuel burned drying further than you needed.

Hopper-Bottom Silos for Wet Grain and Drying Plants

Hopper-bottom silos are well suited to the drying stage. Their gravity discharge and custom hopper angles make them ideal for holding wet grains ahead of drying and for feeding a drying plant steadily. Available from 3 to 12 metres in diameter, they empty cleanly and completely, which keeps grain moving through the drying process without stalling. Once the grain is dry, it can move into a flat-bottom silo for high-volume, long-term storage, so the wet and dry stages each get the right kind of silo.

Dryers are available as an add-on, along with the grain handling equipment that moves crop through the system: conveyors, augers, and grain cleaners. Keeping Grain in Condition with Ventilation

Drying is only half the job. Once grain is in the silo, it must stay dry and cool. Brice-Baker silos can be fitted with ventilation to control temperature and humidity, preventing the moisture build-up and hotspots that undo good drying. Our silo inspection service then checks seals and structure over time, using drones to reach difficult areas safely, so the store keeps protecting your grain year after year.
