What Does FM Approved Mean for a Water Tank?

 

FM approval means the tank has passed the rigorous testing set by Factory Mutual, the global insurer and standards body, and is approved for use in fire protection systems. It tells specifiers, insurers, and building control that the tank will hold up when it matters. FM approval is separate from potable water approval. For drinking water, you need WRAS certification instead, which is why our drinking water tanks use WRAS-approved linings rather than FM certification.

 

FM Global Requirements for Fire Water Storage

 

FM Global sets strict requirements for how fire water is stored, from structural strength to how a tank performs under load. Meeting them is not optional for many projects. Insurers, fire authorities, and building control increasingly require an approved tank before they sign a building off. Firestore® Cylindrical Tanks: Firestore® is our cylindrical, site-assembled tank, built from high-grade galvanised steel with a tailor-made internal liner. The Firestore® cylindrical tank is FM approved and suits open ground and larger volumes.

Firetainer® Sectional Tanks: Firetainer® is the rectangular, sectional option for tight or awkward spaces such as plant rooms and basements. FM Approved Tanks for NFPA and International Projects

 

Franklin Hodge does not design tanks to NFPA specifications directly. Instead, we supply FM approved designs that are suitable for NFPA projects, which cover most international fire requirements. Our tank designs also follow AWWA D-103-97 principles, and FM seismic designs are available on request for earthquake zones. That combination makes our tanks straightforward to specify on projects worldwide.
